Introduction:

Simple renal cysts are usually detected incidentally by ultrasonographic investigation. Their borders are smooth, calcification or septa are not seen. The records of the patients who were followed up with diagnosis of simple renal cysts were retrospectively reviewed. The aim is to evaluate the clinical features, course of the disease, complications and the treatment  approaches.

Material and methods:

The study group consisted of patients who were diagnosed with simple renal cysts between January 2011 and January 2017 at our center. Patient records were evaluated for history, physical examination, laboratory results, imaging and follow-up.

Results:

Medical records of twenty-eight patients followed-up with the diagnosis of simple renal cysts were searched. Thirteen (46.4%) of the patients were female and 15 (53.6%) were male. The mean age of diagnosis was 121.03±57.32 months. The mean follow-up time was 37.6±21.56 months. In nineteen (67.8%) patients the cysts were detected incidentally. Non-nephrotic proteinuria was detected in urine test in four (14%) patients. Hematuria was not detected in any of the patients. There was not any significant change in serum creatinine levels as well as electrolytes between first and last visits. Cyst sizes did not change significantly between first and last visits (p>0.05). No complications were recorded and none of our patients had needed surgical intervention during follow-up.

Conclusions:

Simple kidney cysts are benign. They are usually detected by ultrasonographic examination and not associated with malignancy and/or renal failure. Although it is important to follow the patients, complications are quite rare in pediatric age group.
