Introduction:

The aim of the study is to determine risk group for kidney disease with dipstick screeningprogram in healthy school-aged children.

Material and methods:

We evaluated results of urine dipstick tests of school-aged children which was screened by Children Kidney Foundation under the name of “Children Kidney Foundation Early Diagnosis Project”. Second dipstick test was performed in those students who had hematuria and/or proteinuria in first test to evaluate the persistency.

Results:

There were 1052 students (541 male, 511 female) from7 schools between ages of 9-10. Abnormality in urine dipstick test was detected in totally 842 children(80%). Sixteen cases had isolated hematuria (1.5%), 22 cases isolated proteinuria (2.1%) and one case (0.1%) combined hematuria-proteinuria. In the second evaluation with dipstick test, we determined that hematuria persisted only in 8 (0.8%) and proteinuria persisted in 2 cases (0.2%). Additionally, 96 cases (9.1%) were positive for leucocyte-esterase, and 18 cases (1.7%) were nitrite positive in the first screening.Ten cases were positive for both leukocyte–esterase and nitrite test. All leucocyte-esterase and nitrite positive students were girl. Specific gravity was >1020 in 69.2% of the children and was between 1010-1020 in the others.

Conclusions:

Our findings revealed that the majority of the children had concentrated urine. Children should be encouraged to drink more water and to go to toilette freely for kidney health during school hours. With the help of screening tests in school-aged children; pyuria, hematuria, and proteinuria can be determined and this might bean indication for asymptomatic period of a kidney disease.
